Acai Berry kills cancer cells - has been claimed recently. The Acai berry seems like a magical food that cures everything. But really, can one little berry do all of that? The University of Florida acai berry study has shown it can really help to fight cancer!
The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has published an
article by Stephen Talcott
an assistant professor at the University of Florida. Acai research found that acai berry kills cancer cells: extracts of the fruit caused up to 86 percent of leukaemia cells tested in a lab to self-destruct.
Talcott believes this may have been caused by the high amount of antioxidants contained in berries. The studies found that acai antioxidant levels are the highest antioxidant levels of any food, as measured by the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC), the scale used to measure antioxidant activity.
While the findings do not prove that compounds in açai berries may prevent leukaemia in people, the researchers were optimistic.
"This was only a cell-culture model and we don't want to give anyone false hope," Talcott said. "We are encouraged by the findings, however. Compounds that show good activity against cancer cells in a model system are most likely to have beneficial effects in our bodies."
We live in a stressful world, any stress we put on our body from unhealthy foods, polluted air, smoking, etc. can cause free radicals. A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell – the fact that it does not have a full outer shell makes it very unstable and aggressive to get missing electrons from atoms with a full outer shell. This starts chain reactions, called oxidation, damages cells and has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, diabetes, etc. Antioxidants terminate the oxidation process by giving the extra electron to the free radical so it becomes a stable oxygen molecule again.
Antioxidant research suggests we should get at least 3000-5000 ORAC units per day to significantly impact antioxidant activity, and reduce as much free radical damage as possible to your body’s cellular structure. On average, 80% of population is only taking in about 1200 ORAC units per day, well below recommended levels. Fruits and vegetables have high ORAC scores. Per 100 grams – Apples score a 218, Bananas – 221, Blueberries – 2,400, Pomegranate -3,370, fresh Acai Berry – 5,500 score.
One Pack of Sambazon Acaihas about 6000 ORAC units, and
Acai smoothies
or juices have anywhere 5,000- 15,000 ORAC units.
