Health Benefits of Apples

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”- an old saying can be true looking at the nutritional benefits of apples:

Healthy Heart: Apple skin is a rich source of phytonutrients that function as antioxidants: quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid. Antioxidants protect our cardiovascular system from oxygen related damage.

Studies have shown that insoluble (cellulose) and soluble fiber (pectin) in apples help to keep your LDL cholesterol levels under control and if they are too high, help to lower them. You can benefit from eating as little as 1 medium apple 3 times per week.

Also, flavonoids found in apples provide antioxidant protection; some help prevent inflammation; others help regulate blood pressure and overproduction of fat in your liver cells. Flavonoids have been shown to help lower risk of heart disease, and also to improve problems with heart disease once it has occurred.

Reduce Risk of Cancer: In some studies about cancer risks, apples were the only specific fruit that showed the beneficial association with lung cancer. Quercetin, an anti-oxidant compound prevents oxygen molecules from damaging individual cells. This can prevent cell changes that can lead to cancer. Also, quercetin inhibits the growth of tumors and keeps cancer cells from spreading. Research suggests that apples may also reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer.

Lower Asthma Risk: Apples can lower asthma risk, as has been shown in several studies. When it comes to general support of lung function and lung health – phloridzin (flavonoids unique to apples) – have the special ability to support lung health.

Promotes Healthy Digestion: Apples are great remedies from constipation. Insoluble fiber (cellulose) found in apples helps the digestive tract run smoothly and preventing diverticulosis, a condition which can lead to colon cancer.

Weight Loss is another benefit of insoluble fiber because of it’s "filling" affect, this being an effective appetite suppressant. Also soluble fiber pectin reduces the amount of cholesterol produced in the liver, slows digestion and the rise of blood sugar making it ideal to keep you cravings under control and ideal for diabetes patients.

To get the maximum benefits from apples choose – the most nutritious types of apples!

The Most Nutritious Types of Apples

Researchers have found that different apple varieties have different phenolis and flavonoid content. Roman Beauty has higher phenolic content compared to Idared Cortland and Golden Delicious. Among US varieties, Fuji apples and Red Delicious have high phenolis and flavonoid compound. These apple varieties also have higher antioxidant activity.

With the majority of apples, quercitin and fiber are contained in the apple skin. Unfortunately, the apple skin is also the part most likely to contain pesticides and may have toxic residues if covered in petroleum based waxes. Since peeling the skin will result in loss of the most nutritional part of the fruit, choose organic grown apples whenever possible. Try not to replace apples with apple juice. Though apple juice contains some iron and potassium, it has little of the beneficial compounds, quertecin and fiber.
