The Turnip is a root vegetable, available in several varieties but commonly purple with a white base. The green leaves should also be considered part of the vegetable as they are full of vitamins, so don't discard them. They are an excellent source of vitamin A, with a high Lutein content, folic acid, vitamin C, K, manganese, fiber, calcium and many more vitamins and minerals..

Lutein is a carotenoid, and is believed to protect against age related macular degeneration which can affect our eyesight. Turnips are thought to help prevent cardiovascular disease and have anti-cancer properties. Other Turnip benefits include better digestion given its high fiber content.

Below are a number of calorie tables for both the turnip and turnip greens. See our vegetable calories comparison chart to compare the calories in Turnips with the other calories in vegetables.
