What is the Cabbage Soup Diet?

The first copy of cabbage soup diet appeared in the 1980s. This diet has many names: diet for heart surgery patients, heart patient diet, heart surgery diet, sacred heart soup diet, american heart association diet plan, miami heart institute diet, american heart diet, miracle cabbage soup diet.



The origin of the diet is unknown, so there is no original cabbage soup diet version and the institutions named deny any linkage to the diet. The diet claimed to be created for obese heart surgery patients to lose weight quickly to lower risk of complications during surgery - but this can not be verified.

The New cabbage soup diet has some variations: cabbage chicken soup diet, cabbage beef soup diet, cabbage and chicken soup diet as it includes chicken or beef.

The Cabbage Soup Diet Guidelines

This diet is not RECOMMENDED

It is a very low calorie diet plan which is based on consumption of large quantities of cabbage soup and very little else over the period of seven days.

The copy of cabbage soup diet must be followed strictly. Eat as much cabbage soup as you like to keep you full up. No alcohol - drink a lot of water and unsweetened fruit juice (on the days when fruit is allowed) instead.

The Copy of Cabbage Soup Diet:

Day 1

- Cabbage soup (see cabbage soup recipes below) plus as much fruit as you like, excluding bananas.

Day 2

- Cabbage soup plus vegetables including 1 jacket (baked) potato with a little butter.

Day 3

- Cabbage soup plus fruit and vegetables excluding potatoes and bananas.

Day 4

- Cabbage soup plus up to eight bananas and as much skimmed milk as you like.

Day 5

- Cabbage soup plus up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes.

Day 6

- Cabbage soup plus as much beef and vegetables (excluding potatoes) as you like.

Day 7

- Cabbage soup plus brown rice, vegetables (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.

How to make Cabbage Soup.

The Copy of Cabbage Soup Diet - here is one of the variations of this recipe:

6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
1 bunch celery
1/2 head cabbage
1 package Onion Soup Mix
1 or 2 cubes bouillon (optional)
Season to taste (salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc).





Does Cabbage Soup Diet Work?

The diet promises fast weight loss - 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in a week, though nutritional experts point out that it is nearly impossible to lose that much fat within a week.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a quick fix solution to lose weight quickly, but the loss of weight will come from loss of water and muscle tissue not from fat reserves. The combination of foods allowed would force the body into starvation mode, will slow down metabolism and encourage the body to hang on to fat reserves!

This diet regime requires planning in advance and frequent shopping trips for the supply of vegetables and fruit. Also, will involve cooking and eating separately from other family members not following this eating regime.

The cabbage soup diet ingredients are mostly healthy. Hovewer, if you use a stock or soup mix finished soup could be quite high in salt. Overall the diet is deficient in protein, carbohydrate and essential fats. Since the diet is only supposed to be followed for seven days, this shouldn't cause people in good health any long-term problems, but people who have special dietary needs, including diabetics, should definitely consult a doctor before starting the cabbage soup diet. No one should follow the diet for more than seven days.

Bottom Line: The results from the diet are short term only. It is not a solution to a healthy, long term eating plan. A balanced, healthy diet combined with exercise is still the most effective and safe long-term way to lose weight.
