The Body mass index (BMI) is the most commonly used measure of obesity and is the best known healthy weight calculator. Use our online BMI calculator to check if you are in the healthy weight range.
Adolphe Quetelet was a Belgian mathematician and astronomer, who invented the Quetelet Index in the 1830’s. His investigation started when both the medical profession were beginning to realise that fat was no longer a sign of good health as was previously thought and the insurance industry woke up to the fact that mortality rates from overweight people were very high.
Ancel Keys, an American, became very interested in diet in the post war period in the 20th Century after realising the incidence of heart disease in Americans was far higher than Europeans where food was less available. In 1972, Keys validated the Quetelet Index and it became the Body Mass Index (BMI) as we know today.
BMI takes an approximation of body fat
based on our height and weight, it does not actually measure body fat.
It’s a very simple calculation that should only be used as a guide, and
takes no account of muscle mass. The body mass index calculation applies
to both adult women and men.
As we said above, BMI does not take into account the composition of your body, so may not always be accurate. For example, athletes and bodybuilders with strong muscles or people who have large body frames could be shown as obese by BMI calculations, but may have very little body fat. A gymnast could be estimated as underweight but not unhealthy. However, for the average person, it is a good measure of whether you have a healthy weight for height ratio. BMI is not accurate for children as they are still developing.
For most people, unless you are a bodybuilder, if your BMI calculation is high, that usually means you are high in body fat. As your body fat and BMI increases, and you are measured as obese (i.e. 30 or above), health risks increase. Being either overweight or obese means you are increasing the risk of having heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, etc. If this is the case for you, then set out to gain a healthy body weight, which will not only help you to lower the risk of certain health diseases but will help you feel fitter and lead a long healthier life. The challenge is then to maintain a healthy
